Technology has paved way for many things in this world. Booking tickets is one of such things. Travelers have found comfort in booking tickets online with just a click of a mouse. Indian Railways have come a long way to computerize the booking of tickets and publishing information about trains online. The complex task of waiting in queues for booking the ticket in the first come first serve basis has reduced significantly.
This, in itself, has increased the number of passengers choosing railways as a travelling medium when compared to the other mediums. The ticket once booked online or in person, immediately generates a PNR number.
PNR is the abbreviation for Passenger Name Record. It is assigned for a person or a group of people who are travelling via airplane or railways. PNR is a unique number with ten digits assigned for each ticket. The computer reservation system (CRS) identifies the PNR number with its travel itinerary.
PNR is issued along with the ticket only if the following details are furnished to the CRS: name of the person or people travelling, the details of the travel agency that books the ticket (if applicable), details of the ticket, itinerary of the travel and the name of the person who is booking the ticket. PNR has proved to be useful in the ticket bookings of Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).
IRCTC prints the PNR number on the top right corner of the railway ticket. This number enables the passenger to check the status of their ticket with respect to their train. PNR status can be checked online at any time. If a passenger is waitlisted, the upgrade of the status shall be available online. The passenger can know whether he/she has a confirmed ticket before going to the railway station at the comfort of their home. To Check PNR Status, the first method available was a phone call enquiry to the IRCTC. This became less feasible as the number of travelers kept increasing. Online support for the PNR status was introduced to make things simple for the passengers and the railways.
In the recent days, PNR status had been made available on mobile. A single text with the PNR number to the enquiry will send an automated text back to the sender with the status of their ticket. The assigned seat number and the coach number can be reviewed using the PNR number. A waitlisted passenger can see whether his seat is confirmed or not. The upgraded seat number will not be specified till the train chart is prepared, which is 4 hours to departure. PNR status also updates the train information. This is useful to check if the train is canceled or not, even before leaving one’s home.
It takes just ten digits to simplify the task of the Indian Railways System!
